The Cultural Devolution

February 05, 2003 - 20:41

The Nazis started out to crush intellectual thought by burning books. Then, those suspected of being intellectuals - mostly Jews - were put to death. Stalin also exterminated his critics. The Maoists did it with something they called the Cultural Revolution. They sent people off to camps to have independent ideas beat out of them. Senator McCarthy and his gang tried to do the same by using boogie men and black lists. Funny, how intelligence can make stupid people so insecure.

Today, America crushes its intellectuals through mind numbing, repetitive drivel thats simply fed through official agencies into the media.

How on earth can we possibly make informed opinions based on footage thats simply looped over and over without any trace of informative comment with completely unrelated headline trailers running across the bottom. All we get is speculation and official propaganda. Government will release carefully crafted statements that our media simply spews out without any analysis whatsoever. Newspapers arent much better with big banner headlines, full page colour photos and damn little context.

If you believe the numbers, though, theyre giving us what we want. There are options - PBS, NPR, etc. But we wont watch those. Not glitzy enough, I guess. Quite frankly, those polls are only based on what we react to. We dont know what we want.

Like sheep, we accept and go along with whats happening without question. But let me ask you this. Since when is it acceptable to invade a sovereign nation, no matter how big a scumbag its leader is, based on such feeble premise as the ones that are being thrown around lately?

You found a missile in a garbage dump that may have had poison gas in it? Saddam may be harbouring terrorists? He better stand in line. Weapons of mass destruction? Look in the mirror. The US is the only nation to have actually used the Atomic bomb to kill families in their homesas a demonstration of might.

But whos standing up against this farce. Sure there are pockets of resistance but US politicians, in the end, will only listen to US voters. And where are they? That comedy at the UN today? It took this long to come up with that mere jingoism?

I never thought Id see the United States perpetrate such folly. Even at its worst, there was a sense of justice and value in the nations political rational. Thats just not there in this case. Theyre going to kill Iraqi people by the thousands, and well consume the spectacle the same way we swallowed the Monica Lewinski debacle and O.J.s trial.

I do despair some times.
